Doane Academy

Welcome from the Dean of Admission

We're delighted that you're thinking of applying for your child's admission to Doane Academy.

We seek to enroll mission-appropriate students who have the potential and inclination to contribute to and benefit from its college preparatory program and successfully fulfill its requirements. Students are selected for admission on the basis of academic promise, social and emotional maturity, school achievement, independence, creativity, and readiness for the School's program. The School seeks students who are self motivated and ethical, who respect their fellow students and faculty, and who provide ethnic, economic, and social diversity and balance in our student body. Each applicant is carefully evaluated as an individual.

Testing is used as a tool to provide information to assist in the assessment of candidates. We provide ISEE testing here at Doane Academy. Next scheduled test date is April 19th and June 14th, 2008 (Registration begins at 8:30 a.m., test starts at 9:00 a.m.).

Please plan to visit our campus by attending an Open House or arranging for a private tour. We look forward to meeting with you and your child(ren).

Applying for Admission

Doane Academy offers a simple, sequenced admission process.

ApplicationStep One
Start by obtaining an admissions application for admission. You can do that in one of two ways:

1) Download the admission application; it's in PDF format. You'll need to have Adobe Reader 5 or 6 to open and print the file. (If you don't have the free Adobe Reader already, you can get it here.) Ready to start the download? Click the image of the application on the right or click here. The application is 12 pages; we've made the file as small as possible, but it's still 2.9MB. So give it a few minutes.

2) If you'd rather not download the application, you can phone Susan Gillespie, the Dean of Admission (609 386-3500, extension 15) or email her (sgillespie@thehall.org) to receive an application by mail.

Step Two
When you have the application, complete both sides of the first page. Send it, along with the nonrefundable $35 fee, to the Admission Office.

Are you wondering about financial aid? This page explains the process for applying for assistance.

Pre-K and Kindergarten applicants, please note: Recognizing the importance of emotional, social and physical maturity to a child's school success, we require our pre-K students to be age four and our Kindergarten applicants, age five, by September 1 of their entry year.

Step Three
Contact the Admission Office (609 386-3500, extension 15) to schedule a classroom visit and arrange for a personal interview. We'll work with your schedule to find a convenient time.

Students applying to Pre-K through Grade 6 will be evaluated on the day of their class visit. To ensure that your child is placed in the class most appropriate to his or her developmental level, we evaluate every Pre-K and Kindergarten applicant using Gesell assessment, a highly regarded development screening tool.

Step Four
Submit the remaining application forms, which include:

  • Official copies of all academic transcripts, including standardized test scores
  • Student essay (applicants to Grade 4 through 12 only) and academic and extracurricular information
  • Teacher and guidance counselor recommendation forms

Step Five
Make arrangements for entrance testing if your child is applying to the Upper School (Grade 7 through 12). Upper School applicants need to register for the Independent School Entrance Exam (ISEE), which is administered five times a year at the Academy. You will find an ISEE Online Guide in your admission packet. We will administer the ISEE here at Doane Academy.

Students who have taken the SSAT during the current year may submit those test results in place of the ISEE.

Come to an Open House!
We invite you to an Open House, where you can tour the school, meet the Headmaster, faculty, and students, and review the curriculum. It's the best way to experience the significant difference in a Doane Academy education. Our next Open House is May 16, 2008 from 9 a.m. until 12:00 p.m.

You don't need to register for our Open House events. Just stop in!
