Doane Academy

The Lower School

The Lower School at Doane Academy is defined as students from Pre-Kindergarten (Pre-K) through Grade 6. Lower school students at St Mary's Hall

From the very first day of school, beginning in Pre-K, students are taught that they are being prepared for success beyond their years. Lower School students master skills and acquire basic knowledge in language arts, reading, math, science and social studies in traditional self-contained classrooms with their primary teacher. Those teachers are compassionate, well-educated, and gifted. (See the faculty directory for more on the men and women who teach at Doane Academy.)

All Lower School students have classes each week with specialists in art, music, physical education, modern language, computer science, and library. We don't see these subjects as extras; we consider them an important and non-negotiable part of a well-rounded education.

As an integral part of the academic program, each spring Lower School students from Grade 3 through Grade 6 engage in an interdisciplinary learning experience we call “Interim.” Under the direction of a faculty member, students might do environmental research along the Jersey shore, study flight and aircraft while visiting McGuire Air Force Base or learn about the Amish way of life while touring the Lancaster countryside. Interim is not a break or vacation, but another chance for students and faculty to learn and grow together in the context of studies that are interesting and engaging.

A Doane Academy education encompasses a world of experiences through which students discover the very best within themselves and enhance their capacity to relate to the people and places around them. There's no better preparation for higher education— or for life.
