Upper School students complete a challenging liberal arts course of study and a demanding extracurricular program. These experiences are designed to prepare students for college and to help them fully explore their unique talents and interests. Upper School students have the opportunity to take calculus, physics, Level IV French, Spanish, or Latin, advanced English composition and literature, social studies electives, such as Civil War, psychology, law and economics, art and music electives, computer programming — and AP level courses in every department. Twenty-two credits (5.5 per year) are required as a minimum during the transcript years, which are grades 9 through 12. This section provides a full listing of both required and elective courses, as well as further details about requirements for graduation. As an integral part of the academic program each year, students in the Upper School engage in an interdisciplinary learning experience we call “Interim.” Under the direction of a faculty member, students might experience French culture during a visit to Quebec City or study ancient remains in Mexico. They might learn about the medieval period and re-create a feast appropriate to that time, study African-American participation in the Civil War, or choose to hike, bike, or camp out on the Venture Trip. Interim is not a break or a vacation, but another chance for students and faculty to learn and grow together in real-world settings. |
